WLGYL… Don’t Be Bitter LAUNCH!

London – 27 October 2023

In an effort to empower and inspire first-generation immigrant girls, When Life Gives You Lemons hosted its launch event on the 27th October 2023 that addressed critical issues such as imposter syndrome, confidence building, and navigating early careers. The event aimed to provide valuable insights and support to young women embarking on their educational and professional journeys.

Grainne Boushel leading the discussion around imposter syndrome.

Imposter Syndrome Workshop: Breaking Barriers and Building Confidence

The day kicked off with an insightful session on imposter syndrome, hosted by Gráinne Boushel and supported by me. Imposter syndrome is a phenomenon often experienced by individuals who doubt their accomplishments. Through an engaging and informative presentation, attendees gained 3 valuable tips to recognize and combat imposter syndrome, fostering a sense of self-assurance and resilience. An attendee claimed: “The discussion on imposter syndrome was eye-opening for me. I learnt the different ways in which imposter syndrome can vary and focusing on the facts is necessary.” It was clear that the session was invaluable to attendees, and it will be a topic that we will be revisiting in the future.

Confidence Workshop: Cultivating Empowerment

Following the imposter syndrome session, participants took part in a dynamic confidence-building workshop. Led by experienced facilitator, Katie Hilton, the workshop focused on practical strategies to enhance self-confidence, communication skills, and assertiveness. A key method that stood out to me was the superman stance – body language means so much to how your confidence not only translates to others but also how you feel within yourself. Attendees left equipped with newfound confidence and a deeper understanding of their strengths. Through Katie’s engaging presentation, attendees had almost spoken to everyone in the room! I am positive we will be welcoming Katie to our future sessions.

Early Careers Panel: Navigating Pathways to Success

The event concluded with an inspiring panel discussion featuring accomplished professionals who shared their personal experiences as first-generation immigrants in the early stages of their careers. Panelists provided valuable insights, advice, and mentorship, covering topics such as career navigation, overcoming challenges, and embracing diverse perspectives in the workplace.

Some key takeaways were:

·      Do not put pressure on yourself – no one is always 100%.

·      You can only know you’re interested in a career if you try it!

·      I don’t have a fall back. If I don’t do it, none else will.

·      Do not be afraid to ask for things and stand up for yourself. The worse they can say is no.

Really special thanks to, Mabintou Kolley, Yasmin Rufo and Victoria Azubuike.

We have a number of events coming up in 2024– online and in-person – alongside other developments. Watch this space! This is just the beginning!

Happy New Year ladies.
