Freshly Squeezed Connections: What Happened When We Rewrote the Rules of Networking

Featuring Muses in the City.

A couple of weeks ago, WLGYL welcomed our wonderful community to the heart of London for our first ‘Freshly Squeezed Connections’ networking masterclass that blended fresh advice, powerful conversations and a twist of community spirit.

Catherine and Miriam from ‘Muses in the City’ gave us all practical advice, which paired with the safe space curated by WLGYL made for a perfect lemonade of exploring natural, fun and productive networking styles.

Here’s what we learnt:

  • Find your style. We discussed how intimidating group networking can be, and how exploring different methods can improve your skills. If you’re better 1:1, seek out those who look like they need company, chances are, they’ll be glad you came over!

  • Body language. Catherine and Miriam reminded us how body language can communicate just as much as your words do. Making an effort to look confident, open to conversation and approachable is key to starting new connections.

  • Be a connector. Be mindful of your values and why you want to network – bring that to those around you. Where can you make a connection or share your knowledge? I personally found that focusing on this point guides me back to my goals in networking - building community and lasting relationships

  • Follow up. Networking doesn’t end when the event does, the real magic happens in what comes after. It can feel like a one-off task, but lasting connections are built in the follow-up. Send that LinkedIn note – even if it may feel a little awkward!

The muses gave us perfectly structured practical opportunities to utilise these tips – everyone had a chance to speak to someone new and put our new skills to the test.

Another highlight was our community table, where girls shared experiences, thoughts and feedback for future WLGYL events. The honest conversations we had about language, womanhood and ‘boys club’ networking brought to light the important work of communities like ours.

Our very own Dunja Relić ended the evening talking to us about her plans for WLGYL this year. We were so pleased to see so many new faces, whether you found us through our social media or word of mouth, you’re always welcome and we can’t wait to see you at our next event.

Keep an eye on our page for the next WLGYL event; we’d love to see you again. Until then, keep showing up, keep connecting, and keep making lemonade.

Until the next squeeze,

Sophia
